DEPUTY COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR POSITION SUMMARY
Beaufort County, SC is seeking an experienced local government administrator to join their team as Deputy County Administrator. The Deputy County Administrator supports the County Administrator by managing daily operations of the County government and assisting the Administrator in executing policies established by the Council. In this role, the Deputy County Administrator will provide executive leadership and strategic oversight across multiple departments to ensure public services are delivered efficiently and effectively. Key responsibilities include aligning departmental objectives with the County’s overarching goals, monitoring performance, and fostering administrative coordination to optimize operations.

Providing executive-level support to the County Administrator, the Deputy County Administrator will oversee day?to?day operations and advance strategic priorities across County departments. Responsibilities include directing, mentoring, and evaluating staff; coordinating workflows and standards; and ensuring high performing teams through continuous oversight and leadership.

This leader plays a pivotal part in policy development—establishing strategic direction, drafting organizational protocols, and guiding leadership through policy implementation. On the fiscal side, it involves contributing to both operating and capital budget planning, monitoring expenditures throughout the year, and managing annual budget preparation and financial policy review.

The Deputy County Administrator collaborates with the County Administrator in the interpretation and implementation of regulations from local, state, and federal levels and is responsible for leading special initiatives and intergovernmental projects. This work involves liaising with elected officials, community groups, and partner agencies. The Deputy County Administrator will also build and maintain relationships internally and externally through committee participation, cross?departmental coordination, and stakeholder engagement, as well as negotiating and managing contracts in alignment with County goals and compliance standards.

In the County Administrator’s absence, this person provides executive oversight and ensures continuity of leadership.

Through these responsibilities, the Deputy County Administrator promotes efficient service delivery, regulatory compliance, fiscal responsibility, strong intergovernmental coordination, and strategic execution—supporting and advancing the county’s mission and vision.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required; Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or other relevant advanced degree is highly preferred
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in local government administration. At least five (5) years in a senior leadership role such as an administrator/manager, deputy administrator/manager or assistant administrator/manager experience is needed for consideration.
  • Strong understanding of public policy, government operations, and budgeting. Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously.
